Metoclopramide-gastroprokinetic agent

Metoclopramide is an antiemetic and gastroprokinetic agent. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, specifically in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), which helps to suppress nausea and vomiting. It also enhances the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract, promoting gastric emptying without increasing gastric secretions.

Uses:

• Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or other medical conditions.
• Management of gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying), especially in diabetic patients.
• Symptomatic relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when other treatments are ineffective.
• Facilitation of small bowel intubation and radiographic examinations.

Dosage Forms:

• Tablets: Commonly 10 mg per tablet.
• Injectable solution: Often 5 mg/mL.
• Oral solution: Available in some regions for ease of administration.
