Promethazine-first-generation antihistamine

Promethazine is a first-generation antihistamine with strong sedative and antiemetic properties. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors and also exhibits mild anticholinergic and dopaminergic effects, making it effective in a variety of conditions, including allergies, nausea, and vomiting.

Uses:

• Allergic Conditions: Relief from symptoms of hay fever, urticaria (hives), and allergic rhinitis.
• Nausea and Vomiting: Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting, including that caused by motion sickness.
• Sedation: Used as a preoperative sedative or for managing insomnia.
• Motion Sickness: Prevents and treats motion sickness during travel.
• Cough and Cold Symptoms: Provides symptomatic relief in upper respiratory tract infections (as part of combination therapy).

Dosage Forms:

• Tablets: Commonly 25 mg per tablet.
• Syrup: Often available in 5 mg/5 mL or 6.25 mg/5 mL concentrations.
• Injectable solution: Usually 25 mg/mL or 50 mg/mL for hospital use.
